National League 2012/13

Thursday 29th was our first National League match of the season coming up against last years winners the Queens Club team of Bryn Sayers and Andrew Lyons. The familiar face of David Glover was on hand at Queens to film the matches so hopefully there will be some footage of the night's play.

The experienced opponents got things started with the 2nd string match on 1st. Nick taking on Andrew Lyons. Nick played and moved well and kept Andrew at arms reach and took the match 6/5 6/5 to get RTC off to a winning start.

Next up was the 1st string match of myself taking on Bryn Sayers fresh from his British Open triumph. This was another good opportunity to play one of the best players in the world.
Bryn started strongly and although I was hitting the ball well he was able to get off to a 3/0 start serving his very familiar high serves. I was finally able to spend some time at the service end and took my 1st game. 1/3. I was now serving well to Bryn, and returning well when at the hazard end. I was able to level at 3/3 playing some very controlled and positive tennis. We each took another game to 4/4. Bryn was able to get to a 5/4 lead before we had a long 10th game. at 30 all we swapped with 2 chases, a longish one of which I lost. 40-30 Bryn chase better than 2. He serves a cut side wall serve and I smash it into the top corner of the Dedans to pull it back to Deuce. We went back and forth for another few points before Bryn was able to take the set. 6/4.
Disappointed to lose the set but feeling like I was giving him a real run for his money I kept at my game plan but now a few errors were coming from my racket and when you give a top player cheap points they will take it and run. And that's what happened 4/1 Bryn in the 2nd. I was able to play a couple of good games from then on but Bryn was too strong taking the match 6/4 6/2.

Onto the 3rd and deciding rubber. A doubles consisting of one set to 8 games. Nick and I had on this court a rather disappointing result in the Open and this was tough opposition to rectify those demons. We played well and at 4/5 Queens it was anyone's. The ever strong Bryn was probably the difference and Queens took the doubles 8/4 giving them a victory of 2 rubbers to 1.

Our next match is a home match on Saturday 12th January vs Hatfield house team of Ben Matthews and Jon Dawes. Tickets are available in the Pro Office.

Thanks,
Chris

National League 2012/13

Thursday 29th November is RTC's 1st National League match in the Premier Division for the season.

Nick Wood and I are heading over to the Queens Club to take on the team of Bryn Sayers and either Andrew Fowler or Andrew Lyons.
I have managed to overtake Nick on handicap with my victories in the British Open played on the same court, so the 1st match on will be Nick vs. either of the Andrews followed by myself taking on British Open Champion Bryn Sayers. Both in a best of 3 set singles. The final match of the night will be RTC vs. Queens in doubles which is 1 set to 8.
Nick and I would love any support if you can get down for an evening's tennis. the 1st ball will be struck at 6.30.
The Queens Pro shop number is 020 7386 3405 for ticket information.

Thanks,
Chris.

Exhibition at Leamington

On Saturday evening 24th November Ben Matthews and I were invited to The Leamington Tennis Court Club to hold an exhibition as part of a weekend of doubles tennis the club were hosting.
It was my first trip to the club and was very much looking forward to it as I've heard nothing but good things about the club.
I wasn't disappointed! There was some good old fashioned gambling, drinking, heckling, supporting and cheering as Ben and I played a semi-serious/semi-fun best of 3 sets. I think the only thing missing was the cigar smoking in the Dedans.... Ben was the victor in 3 sets. I tried hard even claiming I wasn't ready after Ben served a perfect Railroad into the nick and also calling a members hazard when the ball was 'probably' just inside the stroke area claiming that if I told you it fell better than half-a-yard you wouldn't believe me.

The 40 strong guests even tried their hand at a Grille comp at the completion of the match. Each were given 3 attempts at the Grille with a ball off the penthouse at the service end. Robert Frost was bet a tenner that he couldn't hit it left handed as he is actually right handed. Somehow he actually took out the comp picking up a bottle of champers for his trouble.

Many thanks to the club and guests for making it a very fun night.

British Open 2012

The 2012 Neptune British Open has now been and gone running from 11th-20th November.
I had a fairly successful campaign in the singles championship making the Quarter finals stage which bettered last years result of a loss in the round of 16.
My 1st round opponent was young Frenchman Matthieu Sarlangue who is a good talent and exceptionally quick on court. I was able to get the better of the young man and had a very strong win 6/1 6/1 6/2.
Next up was number 8 seed Ricardo Smith head professional at Prested Hall. Having defeated Ricardo in 4 sets last time we met in a best of 5 match I went into the match with some confidence. Having said that he is a very talented player and one of the toughest players to serve to in the game. I was able to put in another strong performance and win in straight sets 6/3 6/0 6/1.
The win took me into a qtr final against number 4 seed and eventual winner of the singles championship Bryn Sayers but also to my best ever handicap of +3.4.
I went down in straight sets to Bryn 6/2 6/4 6/1. I felt the scoreline was a little harsh as we were on court just short of two hours. I was beaten by a stronger opponent in the end but gaining more experience against such a strong player.
The doubles wasn't the greatest of results partnering Nick Wood we lost to two very young and talented lads in Conor Medlow and John Lumley. I didn't tell Nick at the time nor since after losing in 4 sets that the age of our two opponents was a year short of my partners age. 6/4 3/6 3/6 3/6.

Below is a picture taken with 7 of the 8 Quarter Finalist just before my match with Bryn.

Thank you to all RTC members I saw during the week at Queens cheering me on.
